Two important british institutes have composed a list of the most reliable cars. As usual, the japanese brands are totally dominating.

After JD Power announced their reliable brands of the year, now Warranty Direct and WhatCar have associated to study, propose and make their own classification of the most technically reliable brands.

Because its very difficult in this market to make clear standards of classification, Warranty Direct and WhatCar have made their own point system. They’ve started from the fact that Warranty Direct is a company specialized on complementary insurance to the market, so they have a database with the technical problems that the car owners have had. Warranty Direct has information on both the cars that need repairs and on the number of service work done on each car.

In these conditions, WhatCar have proposed a list of 26 auto brands, classed according to their reliability factor. The study was based on a very large number of cars, 38000, and was established based on the number of repairs being done. The average age of the cars was 4.9 years and the medium cost of repairs was 450 euro.

In this list we can see again the japanese brands confirming, with 4 out of the 5 top brands. The only european brand in top 5 is Mini on the 3rd position, which together with the 7th position for BMW gives the german brand a top position. The french have done some progress also, with Peugeot and Citroen beeing on the 6th and 8th positions.
