I was talking some time ago about hybrid/electric cars as a second family car. Well, here’s the Mitsubishi i MiEV, a new full electrical car. Bold step by Mitsubishi here, since they skipped the whole hybrid car step and went directly to the electrical propulsion. I really hope they’re gonna come out winners out of this one. This model will be presented in Japan by the end of 2006 and its got a posterior electrical engine.

Mitsubishi i MiEVThe Mitsubishi i MiEV is more then a prototype but we can’t call it a series model yet. The first tests will take place in the autumn of 2007, when several of them will be delivered to some electrical companies for testing and evaluation in normal conditions.

For those that are wondering the i MiEV comes from Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle, hence the small i instead of the former MIEV (Mitsubishi In Wheel Electric Vehicle). Instead of the micro engines that each wheel had, now we have only one engine. The new engine is powered by Lithium-Ion batteries that take 5 hours to charge from a normal plug or 25 minutes from an external charger. The maximum distance covered with a full battery is 130-160km with a maximum speed of 130km/h.Mitsubishi i MiEV explained

After the testing period the i model will be put on sale. This will happen untill 2010.

Can’t wait! If its not overpriced I’d love to have one of these. 130-160km autonomy is more then enough to go to work or for some small shopping, to take your kids from school or whatever. You can probably do 90% of your driving in this small car, needing a bigger one only when going in vacation.
